近年、発想法の一つとしてデザイン思考が注目されている。アイデアを発散的に出すにはよい方法であるが、実はスクリーニング機能が弱いために、最終的に実現可能なアイデアがどれぐらい残るかは疑問である。そこで本書で提唱するのが、生物の進化プロセスにヒントを得た「進化思考」である。過酷な環境を生き延びてきた生物の世界には、系統（文脈を把握して適切な形態を選ぶ）、共生（生態系を把握し周囲と共生する）、淘汰圧（よいアイデアに絞り切るために捨てる）といったさまざまな知見がある。これらはアイデアを生成し、スクリーニングする思考プロセスに大いに活用できる。
