１９８３年創業のインテュイットは、財務管理ソフトウェアとして後発でありながら、小切手台帳や小切手という見慣れたイメージを取り入れて顧客をつかみ、瞬く間にトップシェアを奪い取った。しかし、時とともにデザインより、機能や使いやすさが重視されるようになった。２００８年にＣＥＯに就任した筆者のブラッド・スミスは、顧客の感情を揺さぶるような製品であることが必要であり、それには卓越したデザインが求められると考えて、デザイン主導の会社を目指す。その取り組みは、チームスポーツのように、製品開発の関係者のみならず、トップをはじめ、全員で関わるものというのが筆者の主張である。
